Beautiful. Technically stunning. Grand. Epic scale. But...

Here there be spoilers... )

Those four issues could have been handled in a much, much better way I think.

Please don't get me wrong, Avatar is very good and I look forward to seeing it again; it's a very fun watch. I wouldn't say that it's necessarily a game changer, though. It does show the power and potential of 3D cinema to create compelling visuals without resorting to gimicky sight gags. This is something that I think 3D animated childrens movies have been doing this well for a couple of years now, Avatar proves that it works well out side of the realm of cartoonish animation. Avatar shows film makers of more genres how to do 3D right if the story is best served by the technology.

Seriously, my few misgivings aside it's a great film worth of every consideration. Go and see it.

furigana

  • Dec. 19th, 2009 at 12:00 AM
Is there a way to copy a text from Aozora library, paste it in a MS Word file and then turn all furigana placed in brackets after kanji like this

青空(あおぞら)

into furigana above the text with Phonetic Guide function?

Perhaps there is a downloadable macro somewhere that can do it automatically for the whole text?

Thanks for any help!

Question

  • Dec. 18th, 2009 at 11:57 AM

Hi all, I was reading some magazines and came across some words/sentences which I'm not quite sure what they meant.  Could someone kindly translate them for me? Thanks in advance. :)

1. 意外とフレントリというか海外ノリで、すぐ打ち解けられるタイブだよね?

2. 「初めまして」の瞬間はちょっとぎくしゃくする感じもあったけど、わりと早い段階で今でぐらいの感じにはなってたと思う。それって、俺の中ではあまりないことなんだよね.

3. 好き好きアピールはめっちゃするんです. (suki-appeal? The context seems to suggest that it's some kind of flirting actions? ^^;)

BCR Xmas Funday 2009

Border Collie Rescue Christmas Funday!

bcrxmas2009
Here's the Flickr set!

It looked for a while like the event would be soaked by rain, but though it was pouring in Los Angeles, it was bone-dry in El Mirage! Perfect dog-weather: crisp, chilly and dry. I can't blame those who bailed, but they missed a great day!

I made a special raffle basket that included a collar-leash combo with border collies and sheep on it. There was a ton of food-- I dogified the turkey carcass and got nearly a gallon of bits for the dogs out of it. R0ndo and Apache had a good time. The Santa hats lasted all of three seconds on their pointy heads, but R0ndo good naturedly put up with the jingle bells all evening (Apache hid until I took them off her).

I have a request, though I don't know where/which comm to post it to...

I was wondering where I could find large, good quality scans of the below books/comics in the original Japanese, please:
1. Doraemon
2. Warumono
3. Monster ~ The Monster Without a Name (Namae no Nai Kaibutsu - OBLUDA)

If you don't know where I can find them, can you please point me in the right direction of which place would be better to request this?

787 sighting

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Saw the 787 landing at King Co. Airport (the real name for Boeing Field) after its first flight. Neato. Very long and wiggly wings, very quiet approach. And a pair of T-33 jets following it. Aviation geekery at its finest.

One Impact of Online Footprints...

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 10:58 AM
I think that it was about five years ago now, maybe a little less, that I learned one of the most valuable lessons of the Internet that I think anybody could ever be given: assume that what you write online is forever and that you have no real control where that information goes. Conceptually I’d known that was true, I mean I was an operations engineer for a huge ISP so I knew that control of data doesn’t really rest in the hands of end users [once it’s online] but conceptual knowledge is just a vagueness that rarely gels into reality without practical application…or experience.

numbers

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 1:25 AM
Are numbers stated in the formal form, like 3486 "sanzen yonhyaku hachi-juu roku" in all contexts? In English, "thirty-four eighty-six" is fine when reading off a serial number or license plate, though usually not for a quantity or price. Is is appropriate to say "sanjuu yon hachijuu roku"?

thanks

Greetings?

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 6:47 PM
I have to give a greeting when I'm introduced at my old university's 留学生体験 Speeches.

Could I say something simple along the lines of:
今日は招待してくれてありがとうございます。

Or should I elaborate a little more?

どうせまた3日で飽きるのがオチだろこないだほなんだつけトソネル掘つてモロツコまで行くんだつけ?

Also, I don't understand what モロツコ and トソネル are ;_;

Thank you! <3

quick question

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 8:47 PM
Does anyone know what "S" means on a Japanese TV guide?
Also, are there any puns on actor's names or anything I might want to know about in the picture under the cut? FWIW, ご隠居さま is supposed to be a 時代劇.

I've been so busy my Japanese is getting rusty, so I'm doing a few projects to practice... and got stuck on these two:

読みずらいかもしれないけど

I have no idea what the 'zurai' means, at all...

病みきった

I think this may mean 'fallen ill'? It would make sense in the context of the song~

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!!

Help?

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Hello~ I'm a beginner at Japanese, so I'm not very knowledgeable in most kanji.

I'm having trouble finding that translation for this sentence:

今日から俺勇者やんで!

I tried babelfish and imtranslator and got "We hero stopping from today!" and "Nde I and brave today!" which I can't figure out at all.
I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can translate this for me! :D Thank you~

Christmas Card

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 10:38 AM
Hi,
I would like to write my girlfriend a Christmas card in Japanese this year, so I need somone that could maybe tell me if I made any mistakes.
I would be really thankful if someone could help me out.

This is the text:

あなたは素晴しいです。過渡五年間は絶妙です。必ずこの時間は人生最良の時間違いないと思います。あんたは私の日ですから、あなたに愛しています。 メリ クリスマス

Thanks again
